"Today is a banner day in auto safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that all new passenger cars and light trucks will be required to have Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a safety technology that may well be the most beneficial of our generation because of its ability to prevent many crashes, injuries and fatalities. "ESC is an elegant enhancement that assists drivers in maintaining control during extreme maneuvers, helping to prevent rollovers and other loss-of- control crashes. Like other passive safety equipment, ESC does nothing until a driving situation demands a split-second response. Then, it becomes your very best friend. "While safety belts and air bags are your first line of protection when a crash occurs, in many circumstances ESC works to keep you from getting to that point. "The vast majority of rollovers are single-vehicle crashes involving loss of control. Crash data studies by NHTSA and other organizations worldwide show that ESC causes a dramatic reduction in these crashes. "NHTSA studies show a reduction in single-vehicle crashes of 35-67 percent, and a reduction in single-vehicle crashes with rollover of more than 70 percent -- the potential to save between 5,300 and 10,300 lives and prevent between 168,000 and 252,000 injuries every year. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) estimates that ESC could prevent 10,000 fatal crashes each year. "Many auto manufacturers already are offering ESC as standard or optional equipment, and consumers should request it the next time they buy a new vehicle. "Continental is proud to have been the first to introduce ESC to NHTSA and the broader auto safety community at a time when there was heightened concern about SUV and other vehicle rollovers, and no solutions. We also were the first to implement a national consumer education program about ESC called Safely There. Education is a critical component to the market introduction of any new safety equipment."
